Here are the best things to do in Levis (Quebec):

1. Enjoy the views

Take a ferry ride down the St. Lawrence River and take in the breathtaking scenery. You will be able to see vistas of both Lévis and Quebec City.

Ferries run all year, leaving every 20 to 30 minutes from both city terminals. Ferries leave Lévis every hour on the hour if you want to enjoy the scenery in the evening.

Remember to bring your camera to capture the sights of Old Quebec City as you pass by. Whether you take the ferry during the day or at night, you will be amazed.

2. Visit A Historic Train Yard

Joffre Yard, a historic roundhouse, is located in the Charny area. The roundhouse has been classified as a Canadian National Historic Site. The Charny railway station, which is one of Lévis’s oldest, is also located in the district. It is still in use as a stop on the Montreal-Quebec line today.

Because it is a significant stop on the Montreal – Gaspé route, Via Rail runs shuttle buses from the station to Gare du Palais in Quebec City.

3. Go Back In Time

Saint-Nicolas, one of Canada’s oldest parishes, is located in Lévis. The area’s history dates back to 1694. As you wander through the streets and look at the historic buildings, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time.

Because the neighborhood is located along the river, it provides spectacular views of Quebec City. Nicolas de Myre, a notable 4th-century Christian saint, was given the name Saint-Nicolas.

4. Discover The St. Lawrence

The Route des Navigateurs recognizes the significance of the St. Lawrence River in the history of not only the city, but the province as a whole. For a total of 470 kilometers, the path follows the river’s edge.

Because a section of the Route des Navigateurs goes through Lévis, you can learn about the river and its history without leaving the city.

The path is signposted with blue signposts that will guide you along the journey. Parc de L’Anse-Tibbits, Parc de L’Anse-Benson, and Parc et Marina de la Chaudiere are just a few of the wonderful city parks along the way.

5. Walk Across The River

Across the Quebec Bridge, the bridge has a pedestrian walkway that allows you to go from one city to the other across the river.

The bridge measures 987 meters in length, 29 meters in width, and 104 meters in height. It also has the longest cantilever bridge span in the world.

There are three highway lanes on the bridge if you prefer not to walk. However, this is the quickest way to cross the river, but walking is so much more enjoyable.

6. Visit a Fort

There are three in Lévis, all of which are located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. They were designed in such a way that a single lengthy wall was not required.

The British Army constructed Fort No. 1 between 1865 and 1872. It is currently known as the Lévis Forts and is a National Historic Site of Canada.

Learn about the military life at the fort and explore the star-shaped fort. Take a tour of the tunnels, case mates, and underground chambers with a guide, or roam about the outside area to observe the terreplain, rolling bridge, and caponier.

7. Take a look at a waterfall

Chaudiere Falls, right off Route 75 near Charny, is a short distance from the city center. The waterfall is located along the Chaudiere River and is surrounded by stunning surroundings.

Be mesmerized by the waterfall’s splendor by staring at it. There are several vantage points from which to appreciate it, as well as opportunities for photographers to capture images of the falls and their surroundings.

The adjacent park offers some nature trails, so you can easily spend a few hours there. A suspension bridge is also present.

8. Visit A Mansion

It’s not just any mansion; it’s the former home of Alphonse Desjardins, the Desjardins Group’s founder. His former mansion is now a memorial to him.

Every year, about 200,000 people visit Maison Alphonse-Desjardins. The mansion, now a museum, is open all year and admission is free.

Take a guided tour of the house to learn about the Desjardins family’s history. You can also go to the mansion and explore it on your own.

9. Look At Some Artwork

In a historic Anglican church, the Louise-Carrier Gallery is located. Louise Carrier, a well-known local portrait artist, is honored with the gallery’s name.

The artist’s former home, which is adjacent to the cathedral, houses the 7 galleries. Every year, almost 200,000 people come to see the magnificent artwork on display at the gallery.

Artists from Lévis and the surrounding area are represented in the gallery. The Louise-Carrier Gallery organizes several exhibitions in addition to its permanent collection.

10. Slash Around In A Fountain

The Fontaine du Quai Paquet is an excellent place to cool yourself on a hot summer day, or night. You can also stroll in it and splash around in it.

The 2,400-square-meter fountain has 160 jets that reach a height of nine meters. Throughout the day, the jets rise at varying levels every five to twenty minutes.

A walkway and green grounds surround the fountain. Relax on the grass or take a seat on a bench and watch the jets rise after you’ve had your fill of splashing.

11. Look At Polar Bears

The Aquarium du Québec is located directly across the river in Quebec City. Cross the Quebec Bridge on foot or by car to see polar bears through an underwater glass viewing station.

The Aquarium du Québec is home to a variety of aquatic species, including starfish, harbor seals, and walruses, in addition to polar bears. In reality, the aquarium is home to over 10,000 creatures.

Sign up to get up close and personal with some species, or simply stroll around and observe the marine life in its natural setting. Touch a stingray, play with amphibians, or observe walruses.

12. Consider Taking A Culinary Lesson.

In a century-old home, learn how to prepare traditional Quebec cuisine. Madame Germaine offers culinary workshops in which you will learn how to prepare a variety of foods, not just local ones.

Learn how to make an authentic three-course Quebec feast in a cooking class at her house. Alternatively, enroll in her Chinese, Indian, or Vietnamese cooking classes.

All ingredients, the class, and written recipes are included in the price. You also eat the dish after you’ve prepared it.

13. Tour A Historic Neighborhood

The St. Romuald neighborhood runs parallel to the St. Lawrence River. It’s a charming neighborhood with a history dating back over 8,000 years that’s perfect for a strolling tour.

Take a stroll around the streets and take a tour around the historic district, stopping to admire some of the neighborhood’s lovely historic structures. There are some gorgeous homes and a lovely church to be found there.

Make a quick stop at one of the many bars or eateries, many of which are housed within historic structures, on your tour. In the region, there are also some fantastic local shops.

14. Go Shopping

Lévis, like most other cities across the world, has a major retail mall that will satisfy any shopper. Shop for apparel, accessories, and other goods at Les Galeries Chagnon.

Reitmans, Tristan, and la Vie en Rose are among the mall’s many Canadian or even Quebec-based retailers. It also has a large Walmart and a few fast food restaurants.

The Marché de Lévis is a great place to go for something more local. Although many local craftspeople have booths in the market, the major focus is on food.

15. Visit A Shipyard

The historic shipyard Chantier maritime A.C. Davie has been designated as a National Historic Site. You can experience a significant aspect of the city’s maritime history by visiting the shipyard.

The shipyard has been converted into a museum with interior and outdoor exhibitions. One of the widely known features of the shipyard is the yacht Jeffy Jan II, that has sailed St. Lawrence River since 1939.

An interactive museum with the remains of a Canadian-built tow plane, the first of its kind, is also on display at the Chantier maritime A.C. Davie. A magnificent selection of small engravings is also available.
